Moravian Cookie Recipe

Moravian cookies have a reputation for being light and crispy. It incorporates the rich flavor of various spices to make cookies that will stimulate your taste buds. One of the things that differentiate Moravian cookies from others is that it can be made and stored before being baked. If for example you want to have some prepared for a future event and you want to have them freshly baked on that occasion, you can make the dough and store it until the appointed time and then bake them. Now you have freshly baked, delicious Moravian cookies.

  • 2 cups of molasses
  • 4¼ cups of brown sugar
  • 4½ cups of all purpose flour
  • ¾ cups of vegetable shortening
  • 1¼ cups of firmly packed sugar
  • 2 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of salt


  1. Place the butter, brown sugar, vegetable shortening, molasses and salt into the saucepan and onto the stove with the flame on medium. Make sure the pan is heated until all the contents are dissolved.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the stove while it is still warm and add the baking soda, ginger, cloves and cinnamon. Then after gradually add and stir in the flour until everything blends together and form the dough.
  3. Place the dough into a container and let it stay out for 1 – 2 hours. Flatten it and then place the container into the refrigerator overnight or up to a month.
  4. When you are ready to bake the Moravian cookies, turn the oven on to 375 degrees F and allow it to preheat.
  5. Take the dough from the refrigerator and then lightly grease the cookie sheet. Use a little flour to spread on a clean surface and use the rolling pin to spread the dough out until it becomes paper thin.
  6. Use the cookie cutters to cut out the cookies and place them onto the cookie sheet so that they are about ¼ inch apart. Place the cookie sheet into the oven and let the cookies bake for 5 – 6 minutes
  7. When the baking process has been completed take the cookie sheet out the oven and allow it to cool for a bit before putting it on the wire rack to complete the cooling process.
  8. Brush off any excess flour with a soft cloth and store the cookies into an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
